Surface Prep is Key

Article Published on May 16, 2019

Whatever substrate you plan to coat, whether it is steel or concrete, proper surface prep is key to a quality coatings project. When coating steel, sand blasting, if possible, is the best method. You can achieve SSPC-SP-10 Near white metal blast (NACE 10) with sand blasting at the proper pressure and with the correct media. Once the sand blasting is complete, the surface profile can be checked with Testex tape and recorded, usually 2 to 3 mils surface profile is best for most epoxy and zinc coatings. If sand blasting is not possible, SSPC SP-11 can be used to properly clean and profile the steel. An MBX bristle blaster can be used to achieve this standard of cleanliness.

Blast Track or Diamond Grinders

When it comes to concrete substrates such as floors, a blast track or diamond grinder will give you the best results. Use ICRI standards to compare the results. Basically, you want the floor to look and feel like 80 grit sandpaper. Always check for moisture in the concrete before coating. You should have less than 4lbs per sq ft of moisture. The use of Positestor CCM probes is recommended to verify the level of RH within the concrete. You should assure that all dust and other foreign contaminants are removed before coating the concrete with a good quality epoxy primer.
